CLINIQUE: All About Eyes Serum

Friday, August 31, 2012

There was a time when I shied away from high end skincare and make up brands for the simple reason that I can't afford to maintain such luxury. My curiosity eventually got the best of me and I gave in to Clinique.

I have to say that even if I did my first expensive single purchase in terms of skincare and makeup, I actually got more than I paid for. I can't remember if it was during Clinique bonus time but I was asked to make a minimum single reciept purchase and got a whole lot of freebies! Hmmm.. Sounds like bonus time to me.

Anyway, I bought the derma white brightening loose powder together with this..

Clinique all about eyes serum 15ml (Php 1,800)

"Ophthalmologist Tested. Allergy Tested. 100% Fragrance Free.
Instantly cools, brightens. Combats puffiness, dark circles. Refreshing mini massage hydrates too. Layerable with other eye treatments."

Clinique all about eyes serum comes in a 15 ml tube with an easy grip. It has a roller ball type dispenser which effectively delivers just the right amount of product.
It has the consistency of a thin serum and appears transparent. It gives immediate cooling effect upon application and has a mild formula that doesn't sting or irritate your under eye area. It also works well with all skin types.

I've been using this on and off for over a year and though consistency is required for best results, this serum still worked wonders for me. I still have puffiness under my eyes but they seem to look lighter and easier to conceal.

I do recommend this to friends and will replenish if it runs out which I believe won't be anytime soon.

CLINIQUE: Bonus Time

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

In the past days, I've been listing down potential products from Clinique that I have to buy during the much anticipated bi-annual clinique bonus time. I was actually itching to know when will be the next and asked Clinique via their facebook page. Luckily, My Gorgeous Pink Cheeks shared her blog entry as a response to my query.

Good news, we won't have to wait long because the clinique bonus time will be on September 1 to 23. Ladies, you all know the drill, for every single receipt purchase of Php 4,500 you'll be given these amazing gifts..

Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (15ml)
All About Eyes Rich (5ml)
Moisture Surge Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator (15ml)
Turnaround Instant Facial Masque (15ml)

Moisture Surge Facial Spray
Almost Lipstick, Flirty Honey

But wait!!! There's MORE! Just like in home shopping network, upgrade your purchase to Php 5,000 and you get a toiletry kit absolutely free of charge! :)

I actually did a little web browsing in the past days to see which Clinique products I will consider buying to reach the minimum purchase requirement for the Clinique bonus time. I have to admit, I listed 16 but realized I shouldn't be getting similar products included in the freebies. So the list was narrowed down to the following:

https://www.facebook.com/CliniquePH

"Mouthwatering moisture and a hint of soft shine, that's your Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm. Don't leave home without one of these crayon-esque barrels of lip goodness! https://www.facebook.com/CliniquePH

"Clinique superbalanced powder makeup with SPF 15 mineral rich formula is a loose mineral powder utilizing smart technology to control oil and maintain skin moisture balance all day."
Php 2,400

How I wish I can afford everything listed above so I won't have to narrow the list further. Though I really don't splurge on makeup and try not to buy more than one expensive skin care or makeup product in just a single purchase, I find Clinique bonus time an exception to the rule since you'll be getting more than what you pay for. You get to buy your favorite stuff and try those you haven't in travel sizes.

So ladies, stock up on your favorite Clinique products this coming September 1-23, get your freebies and enjoy!

CLINIQUE: Turn Around Concentrate Visible Skin Renewer

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

I have to admit that if not for the free samples Clinique generously provides after a minimum purchase, I wouldn't be able to try most of their products. Anyway, during my most recent purchase at their Trinoma kiosk, I got so many freebies including the turnaround concentrate visible renewer.

"A high performance cocktail of exfoliants prompts a renewal process that is multilevel, time-released. Speeds fresh, vibrant cells to the surface. Continually unveils brighter, more radiant skin. Leaves skin with a velvety feel perfected look."

The sample size is in a squeeze out tube but the full size looks like this..

shop.nordstrom.com

The sample tube's back says it's allergy tested and 100% fragrance free. Its texture is comparable to a runny lotion. This product applies effortlessly on your skin and gets absorbed almost instantly leaving your skin feeling hydrated without the sticky feeling.

Notice how my skin improved after just one application of the turnaround concentrate. My skin's obvious creases and blotchy redness disappeared. It instantly lightened my complexion and gave my skin a moisturized finish without looking greasy. It has a subtle scent that fades a few minutes after application.

For some unknown reason I couldn't seem to find this on Clinique's website and facebook page. It's also currently not in stock at shop.nordstrom.com so I don't know how much it's being retailed.

Regardless of the price, I do recommend this product to those who want a moisturizer that hydrates without making your oil glands crazy. If you're on a tight budget, this might not be best for you. I will definitely purchase the full size if and when I have extra bucks to spend or when I need to purchase stuff to avail of the clinique bonus time. Overall, this is a great find even for those with oily and acne prone skin.

Online Shopping

Saturday, August 25, 2012

Who wouldn't love discounted products from online shopping sites? I know I do. I tried international online shopping a year ago when I bought my Sigma travel kit and it was indeed a pleasant transaction. Though it took more than 6 weeks for the package to reach Manila and I had to pick it up at the post office to pay for additional postal and customs fee, I believe it was worth the wait.

This successful transaction with Sigma gave me a little confidence in making online purchases from international sites. My next and most recent international purchase was from the site strawberrynet.com last month. The wait was longer than I expected which took approximately 8 weeks. To my surprise I was only asked to pay Php 40 ($1) for postal fee and no additional customs fee was charged. Maybe strawberrynet is a reputable seller and the post office never had problems with their packages that's why they weren't too strict. Anyway, I was really happy when I finally got hold of this..

The box was sealed securely and the items were neatly stacked inside with cute curly styrofoam fillers.

Stuffed inside were Philosophy hope in a jar (purchased) and two freebies from Calvin Klein, delicious light glistening lip gloss in taffy (6.5ml) and delicious luxury creme lipstick in flutter (3.5g). I'll be posting a separate review on these lip products soon.

On to my main concern and sole reason for this blog post, my very own Philosophy hope in a jar which was cutely wrapped in purple/pink glossy paper. The pretty wrapper almost prevented me from tearing it off but my excitement over what's inside undoubtedly prevailed. I was very happy to see that they sent me the commemorative limited edition made especially for Miss Oprah Winfrey in honor of The Oprah Show's farewell season. This was also included in Oprah's ultimate favorite things in December 2010. I'm not really sure what it was, but it suddenly hit me that it's been 2 years since this was first manufactured and I became a little worried that it might be an old stock. My fear became more evident after opening the lid.

I was disappointed with the product's quality. Though the box and jar looked brand new and the seal was intact, the texture was surprisingly unacceptable. The product was in clumps and looked like finely grated parmesan cheese. I tried mixing it hoping to improve the overall texture but to no avail. Both the manufacturing and expiration dates were not indicated on the label or on the box so I couldn't tell if it was really expired.

I immediately sent an email to strawberrynet informing them of the situation. They sent me an equally immediate response apologizing for the unforeseen event and gave me a full refund. They even let me keep all the products they sent. What's more impressive was that they double checked their warehouse for other items from the same batch and made sure to correct the problem and prevent it from happening again.

I commend strawberrynet for their excellent customer service. Though my first attempt of online shopping with them failed, I still recommend strawberrynet to my friends. I will definitely make future purchases but this time I might be considering the type of product first before going through with it.

Online shopping is indeed risky but knowing the right shopping sites and making sure you know what you're buying will make the experience a little less scary with greater chances of landing successful transactions.

This is my STORY.

Monday, August 20, 2012

Last night I saw the replay of Cheche Lazaro's documentary on obesity in iwantv.com.ph. If I was only holding a score board and gained points whenever I shared the same sentiments and experiences with Iza Calzado and the other guests, I would've garnered a nearly perfect score.

I was born a big baby at 9 lbs but I wasn't at all an overweight kid until I reached fifth grade in elementary. I remember having to change my school uniforms because the ones I had the previous year didn't fit anymore. Back then, I didn't know it was the start of my lifelong battle against obesity.

It dawned on me that I was indeed overweight when I reached high school. Everyone else in my class wore fad clothes while I was wearing my older brother's denim pants and shirts. At first, it didn't bother me that I couldn't fit in the clothes worn by people my age. I was okay with being comfortable and thankful I had relatives from abroad who sent me clothes that fit. Ayway, I wasn't going out often so my school uniforms were the ones I wore most of the time. I guess I was also in denial that I was indeed overweight. I was thinking that I was okay as long as other girls in my school were bigger than me.

Then came college. I was dreading the day when I had to wear white uniform but when I got to my school, there were still others bigger than me only this time they were less. Not being the biggest in class gave me a little security.

When I reached med school, I was the biggest girl in my class. My comfort zone was the idea that I may be the biggest among the girls but there were still guys bigger than me. I don't remember trying to lose weight. My lame excuse was that I didn't have to stress myself about being overweight because I had my studies to worry about. I needed all the comfort I could get to cope up with my stressful life in medicine. Finally during my junior internship, I lost a lot of weight unintentionally. I was suddenly in a stressful and tiring situation that my body was gradually getting smaller as the months passed. I really trimmed down to the point when my mom had to resize my uniforms. When I reached senoir internship I gradually regained the pounds I lost. Needless to say that it was very frustrating for me. I was mad at myself for letting it happen. Since I wasn't getting any younger and losing weight was getting more difficult for me, I decided to use weight loss pills. The very first I tried made me feel full the entire day so I ate less but it didn't give me the results I was expecting. I gave up entirely and accepted my fate of being over sized my entire life.

When I reached residency training, I wasn't at all trying to lose weight. I guess I totally gave up on it. I was thinking, people will have to accept me for who I really am. I felt like I didn't have to please anyone so I wasn't at all too conscious with my weight. During my ER rotation, I was again subjected to a lot of stress and physical exertion that I felt my clothes loosening and got my friends noticing. Again without any effort at all I was losing weight. That time, I went out of my way to get this burden of being overweight off my back and started to join boxing and eventually signed up in a gym.

Up to this day I still struggle with my weight. I may not be as big as I was before but my ideal weight is still very far from my reach. I dream of the day when I can finally wear everything I missed wearing, like sleeveless tops and skinny jeans. Watching Cheche Lazaro's documentary and hearing Iza Calzado's  story suddenly made me feel more hopeful. Maybe someday I can be as successful as she is. If and when that happens, I will definitely look back on this day, maybe even write another blog about it. Who knows, my story might encourage others who share my struggles to do the same.

L'OREAL: True Match Super-blendable Powder

Monday, August 13, 2012

This month has really inspired me to do a lot of reviews since I've been replenishing most of the stuff I'm running out of including cosmetics and skincare products. I have been very good at avoiding my impulsive tendencies when it comes to shopping in the past months so when I ran out of my favorite finishing powder (Physicians Formula perfecting mineral concentrate), I couldn't wait to scan the counters at Landmark and get myself a replacement. Before my mall visit, I did a little internet browsing to look for different brands of finishing powder. I was considering Tony Moly, The Face Shop, Neutrogena, Cover Girl and L'oreal. In the end, I got this..

L'oreal true match super-blendable powder in natural ivory. It comes in a 9.5g powder compact with a sponge applicator and mirror at the bottom. I guess the idea is to keep the sponge away from the powder but I really find it hard to use the built-in mirror. You will find this a bit awkward to use unless you get all the powder you need on the sponge (which is impossible) to keep from flipping the compact constantly to get more.

When I asked the sales rep if I could swatch this on my chin, she gave me a triangular sponge applicator which I think is better than the round one included with the compact. The triangular sponge easily reaches all corners especially around the eyes. Feels soft and glides smoothly on your skin too. I asked the sales rep if they sell triangular sponges and she generously gave me what I used to swatch the powder and an extra sponge.

lorealparisusa.com

The powder has a very fine and smooth texture. It blends easily on application and instantly evens out your complexion. This blots away the shine especially on your T-zone and gives a matte finish without any shimmer. You can wear this light for oil control or add more to build up the coverage. It has a faint almost unnoticeable scent and it comes in various shades to cater to different skin tones.

Overall I find this product very impressive that I highly recommend it to everyone who wishes to have a powder that truly delivers. Though it's quite pricey for a drug store brand, I will definitely buy again in the future.

Skin Facts by Obagi Medical

Saturday, August 11, 2012

A few months ago, I splurged on an Obagi signature facial treatment. Though it was discounted at 50% off via Groupon, it still turned out to be more expensive than an average facial. Anyway, the excellent service I got was worth every centavo. You may click here to read the review.

houseofobagi.com

House of Obagi Trinoma

After the treatment session, I helped myself with the array of brochures stacked near the reception area. I was so satisfied with their service that I decided to know more about other skincare procedures they offer. Among the handouts I got, the most interesting was the brochure about sun protection. The contents are so informative that I decided to share them with you. Credit goes to Obagi Medical for coming up with this very simple yet educational handout.

CONTENTS:
  • When you're not wearing sunscreen to protect your skin, UVB and UVA rays can cause the following damage:
    • Sunburn
    • Brown spots (sun spots)
    • Faster skin aging
    • Increased skin cancer risk
  • Obagi sunscreens help prevent sunburn and protect skin health because of their unique combination of ingredients:
    • Physical (inorganic) protection uses ingredients such as mineral pigments to reflect UV rays away from the skin
    • Chemical (organic) protection uses chemical ingredients to absorb UV radiation and disperse it as heat

  • UVA
    • Penetrates skin more deeply than UVB
    • Plays a major role in accelerating photoaging : wrinkles, skin roughening, blotchy skin color, brown spots, poor skin tone, sallowness
    • Can contribute to development of skin cancer
  • UVB
    • Penetrates skin less deeply than UVA
    • Is a primary cause of sunburn
    • Plays a key role in the development of skin cancer
    • Contributes to photoaging
  • What is Sun Protection Factor (SPF)?
    • SPF numbers signify the duration of protection against UVB rays versus not using a sunscreen.

    • Apply sunscreen generously--every day
    • For maximum protection, it's important to use your sunscreen every day because UV radiation can reach the skin even on cloudy days and through glass windows
  • Skin protection guidelines
    • Seek shade, particularly between 10am and 4pm
    • Do not burn
    • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths
    • Cover up with clothing, broad brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses
    • Use a sunscreen every day with an SPF of 30 or higher
    • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen all over your body 30 minutes before going outside; reapply every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating
    • Every month, examine your akin head to toe for changes
    • Every year, see your physician for a complete skin exam

I couldn't get a clear image of the Obagi products recommended for sun protection but you may check their website for the complete list.

I had a wrong notion as to how frequent sunscreens should be reapplied until I read about it in Prevention. According to Dr. Arielle Kauvar, director of Now York Laser and Skin Care Center, to make sure you're covered, reapply your sunscreen at least once every 2 hours if you're in the water or engaging in sweaty activities. However, if you don't plan to work up a sweat or be outside long, sunscreen protection should last 2 to 4 hours, says Dr. Amy Wechsler a dermatologist in New York City.

clipartof.com

Now does it really have to be as frequent as every 2 to 4 hours? I think it depends on how much your sun exposure is during the day. Remember that you need sun protection roughly between 10am and 4pm. So if you applied once in the morning and you're in the office for the rest of the day, there's no need for you to reapply unless you go out in the middle of the day. Let's say your work involves a great deal of sun exposure, a higher SPF will prolong the time before onset of sunburn but you still need to reapply sunscreen every 2  hours.

cliparts101.com

I know how busy each day gets that we often forget certain things that do really matter. Believe me when I tell you that skincare does matter a lot especially when it involves saving you from the worst that can happen. When I say worst, it involves the big C. So the next time you feel too lazy to put on sunscreen, think of how you can save yourself from a lot of trouble with just adhering to a simple step in your daily routine.

BELO ESSENTIALS: Whitening Lotion SPF 30

Friday, August 10, 2012

It was just a few weeks ago when I saw something different from the familiar line up of beauty products stacked in one of the shelves at Landmark. That's actually a trait I'm pretty much gifted with, a hawk's eye on newly released products. Anyway, I was thrilled to notice that the entire display area for Belo Essentials were filled with the same stuff but with a new look. I eagerly scanned through them and almost jumped with excitement when I saw this..

The new and improved Belo Essentials whitening lotion NOW with SPF 30! Okay, this may sound a little over the top but I'm very much particular with sun protection. So much so that even if I slathered on a hefty amount of sunscreen, I still avoid direct sun exposure even for just a few minutes. This is why I salute Belo essentials for taking the bar a notch higher in terms of skin protection by increasing the SPF content without the additional cost.

You read that right. I was keeping my fingers crossed as I looked for the tag and was more ecstatic to find out that the price didn't change at all despite the improved formula. By the way, I have this habit of keeping the tag on so I'd know how much I purchased a certain item. I also write the date of purchase on the  tag so I'd keep track of how long it lasted.

What the label says is quite catchy especially the part saying 'it visibly whitens in just 7 days'. The micro-encapsulated technology is another thing that drew my attention. It says that this technology encloses active ingredients in microspheres to ensure maximum whitening power. These are claims that I do hope Belo essentials can truly deliver.

Pros:
Nice packaging
Blends effortlessly and gets absorbed fast
Leaves your skin hydrated without feeling sticky
Pleasant scent
Affordable price for a product that offers SPF 30 with protection from UVA and UVB rays

Cons:
*crickets*
I don't have any issues about this product but I do hope they can live up to their claims and truly deliver maximum whitening power with visibly whiter skin in 7 days.

In Conclusion:
Maintaining skin cleanliness and moisture are not enough to keep your skin healthy. You must also PROTECT your  skin from sun damage hence you need a product that doesn't only moisturize but also offers an SPF of at least 30 and protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Fortunately, Belo essentials have all these which is why I recommend this to all my friends. Will I repurchase? Yes, this product is a must-have on my list.

AVEENO: Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

I can't begin to tell you how much I love BB Creams (Blemish Balm Cream) and how I've been looking forward to the day when two of my favorite skin care brands, Olay and Aveeno, come up with their own line of BB products. A lot of other manufacturers from drug store to high end have released their own versions of this much talked about product except for these two.

But reality check would tell you that they do have their own version in the form of tinted moisturizers, Definity Color Recapture for Olay and Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer for Aveeno. Unfortunately, both products are not readily available in Manila but I was lucky enough to receive the latter as a gift from my fiance who got it from Walgreens.

What the label says:
"These are the only tinted moisturizers with clinically proven active naturals total soy complex to brighten and even skin tone while providing SPF 30 sun protection. Natural light-reflecting minerals and lightweight coverage seamlessly blend away imperfections and immediately enhance skin's natural radiance."

*Active Ingredients
     Homosalate 5%, Octinoxate 7.5%, Octisalate 5%, Oxybenzone 2%

This product comes in a 75ml bottle with a pump which in my opinion is a generous amount for its tag. I love that the pump can be twisted either way to lock and unlock the spout.

Aveeno positively radiant tinted moisturizer (medium) SPF 30

Aveeno after blending

The texture resembles that of a liquid foundation but a little thinner in consistency. It spreads easily and blends effortlessly. It gives light to medium coverage as opposed to a liquid foundation so you might be needing a concealer for darker spots or areas like under the eyes. It has light-reflecting particles that make your skin glow without the glittery effect.

What I don't really like about it is that it looks oily on my skin when used alone so you might want to top this with a finishing powder. I'm also not too crazy about the scent which is quite strong, but good thing it goes off in a while.

Since I don't have other tinted moisturizers, I swatched this in comparison to Tony Moly luminous aura BB cream and L'oreal white perfect liquid foundation instead. Notice how similar they are when it comes to texture.

(L) Tony Moly luminous goddess aura BB cream SPF 37
(M) Aveeno positively radiant tinted moisturizer (medium) SPF 30
(R) L'oreal white perfect liquid foundation SPF 18

Aveeno tinted moisturizer was the easiest to blend followed by Tony Moly and L'oreal though you have to bear in mind that these are three different products.
Both Aveeno and Tony Moly appeared to have tiny specks of light-reflecting particles while L'oreal was matte finish without the shimmer.

(L) Tony Moly luminous goddess aura BB cream SPF 37
(M) Aveeno positively radiant tinted moisturizer (medium) SPF 30
(R) L'oreal white perfect liquid foundation SPF 18

After blending, Aveeno appeared to give sheer coverage while Tony Moly and L'oreal had medium to full coverage.

Overall, I'm not so taken by this product but I do like that it looks natural on your face when used with a matte powder. Another plus would be the SPF 30 with UVA/UVB protection.
Do I recommend this to friends? I will to those with normal to dry skin types who have minor skin imperfections and only need light coverage. I don't recommend this to those who need medium to full coverage and those with oily skin. If you have combination skin type like me, again I suggest you top it with a matte powder. Will I repurchase this? Aveeno products have always been so effective on my skin based on years of personal experience this is why I regret to say I will not repurchase this particular product. I will however continue using this, maybe mix it with a matte primer or top it with loose powder and see how it goes.
